Starting off right is crucial to
ling term success. Here are some things to do and
some things to avoid doing.
Write a checklist of what you want from your new job
as soon as you accept the offer. Discuss it
with your new boss.
Talk to
your new boss to establish ground rules and find out
how that person communicates. Know what is
expected of you.
Try to
understand who the players are and establish your
relationships carefully.
Spend
time listening rather than talking. Ask questions
and don't be too quick to offer solutions. Learn how
it is done now before you try to 'make your mark'.
If
possible, start your new job in the middle of the
week. If you start on Monday, you will fade by
Wednesday, but if you start on Wednesday, you'll
fade with everyone else on Friday.
Don't
make the mistake of referring to your former
employer and the way things were done there. It may
give the wrong impression and every company has its'
own culture. Listen, learn and then act.
Show up
on time or early and dress comfortably, but
appropriately.
Show up
ready to work. Don't assume that the first day
or the first week is just for orientation.
Grab that first assignment and shine.
